A Whisky Bottle 3 and Last: The Label

The label for the whisky bottle is the final part of the project. It is a simple label that relies heavily on stencil and other maps to define the different materials that make a label.

Measuring the Bottle

We are going to use a map that covers the whole bottle. The bottle is 3 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. The sheet of the cylinder that covers it, then is around 9 inches wide by 8 inches high. In Photoshop terms, a 900×800 pixel image will do nicely.

Maps

The maps we’ll use are:

Stencil

The Stencil map defines which parts of the label are visible and which ones are not.

Color

The color map defines the different colors in the texture.

Specular Color

We’ll make the lower part of the label of a copperish hue. This is achieved by modifying the Specular color.

Bump

The bump map will simulate relief in the label.

The parameters

This is the texture.

Be sure to check blurred reflections in the reflectivity “drawer” and to add a Primary Mix Ratio of 30% in the smoothness “drawer”.

Mapping

A simple cylindrical mapping that covers the whole of the bottle will do. This is the mapping the bottle will take spontaneously if it is not grouped or made into a shape.

Rendering

The scene will look good with a Soft Shadows – Local Lights Best render setting.

In case the text is not crisp enough, set a Pixel Detail Block Size of 1.

Set a Pixel Detail Block Size of 1 only if the text is not well detailed.
