Modeling powdered contents such as sugar in containers

We already saw how to create liquids in simple containers. Let’s see now how to create solids such as sugar or flour inside simple containers with a variation of the already known technique.

For this scene, the jar will be a simple lathe, and the contents will be created in the same way:

  • Copy and paste the lathed object in the same place
  • Hide one of the objects
  • Edit the other moving and deleting points as needed.
  • Separate the overlapping edges of the two objects a little bit
Now, to create sugar or coffee like in the example image, we need to convert the contents into a Bézier surface.
We then add points as needed to have an adequate surface to work with.
We then move points with the Move Normal tool or invoke the y-axis guide (SHIFT+C). and move the points as needed.

Press SHIFT+C again to dismiss the guide.

Remember reducing the contents object, else the contents may intersect the container and it renders oddly.

Render without reducing the contents

Finally a bumpy texture, applied with cubic mapping and a small size, and we are done.

A sugar texture applied with cubic mapping. Note the size of the cube (1x1x1in.)
