Quick pearls

In this quick tutorial we will learn how to create a pearl shader for Strata Design 3D CX. We will combine an image texture with a corrosion shader.

This tutorial uses the anisotropy channel of Strata Design 3D CX 7 but the technique can be applied perfectly to version 6.

Base Scene

We’ll create a new project based on the Dark Studio Template.

The lights will be changed though, instead of the several directional lights default in the template, we’ll use a single point light.

A pearl

Pearls are spheres, most of the time. Is is convenient to make a pearl shape and scale it as needed.

Texture

This is the basic pearl texture. This example uses the anisotropy channel of Strata Design 3D CX 7, but can be done perfectly well in version 6.

The important parts  (in order) are:

  • Glossiness: 100%
  • Diffuse/Ambient amount: 60%
  • A colored image for the specular color. In this case, a subdued spectrum works well.
  • High reflectivity, with blurred reflections
  • A bit of Anisotropy
  • Primary Smoothness: 16% Secondary Smoothness: 0%
That should work nicely.
Here’s an example with a gold bead for 3 pearls.
necklace

With a change of diffuse and specular colors, we obtain different pearls.

Bump

We’ll use a corrosion shader to obtain a subtle bump in our pearls.

No hole area, no resistant area and a very small bump amplitude.

This corrosion shader will be mapped cylindrically on our pearls. Rendering times increase a bit, so factor this in.

That’s a quick way to begin playing with pearls.
