Texturing subsets: A Spray Paint Can

Strata Design 3D CX 7 allows us to assign different textures to different subsets of a polygon mesh object. We will create a spray paint can to show this new technique.

The Can

The can begins as a lathe and is converted into a polygon mesh to allow subset texturing.

The Polygon Paint can

We need to create three subsets to apply the different textures.

To create a subset:

  1. Get into polygon reshape mode
  2. Make a selection of the polygons you want to be the subset.
  3. Right-click>Set Subset (Alt+N)
  4. Choose the Subset number

We will use three subsets here:

The can cap subset

The can base subset

The can label subset

The textures

The textures are:

  1. Bright plastic for the cap
  2. Bronze for the base
  3. An image texture for the label

Apply the textures normally to the can and then, from the Texture & FX tab of the Object Properties Panel, assign them to the corresponding subsets.

The label is best with cylindrical mapping, and the brass texture is best with planar mapping, to have smooth reflections.

That’s it. A simple way to create objects without modeling too much. This is an excellent addition to Strata Design 3D.
