Creating a Moonstone texture

With the anisotropy features we now have, it’s easier to create semiprecious stone textures such as this moonstone texture.

The scene for this example is a simple one: a lathed stone, a subdivision silver piece, hanging from a path extrusion. A single spotlight lights the scene.

The Moonstone texture is as follows:

The important points are:

  • Blurred transparency
  • Anisotropy
  • A specular color map.

Blurred transparency increases rendering times but is important for a good moonstone.

Anisotropic highlights are the most striking feature of moonstones.

The specular color map is horrible, but gives us the color play of the stone.

Render with caustics enabled to make the most of the object.

Different angles for the stone.
