Creating Braids and Knots with the Skin Tool: Introduction

By Rodrigo Duarte on October 18, 2012

We will create a braided ring using the Skin Tool. This is simple but requires order, lest we end up with a mess of squares and tangled geometry.

We will use squares as ribs for our “braid”.

Let us create 4 squares, as in the image below and group them.

4 squares will be the ribs (not all in this case as we will see)

Replicate the squares so that we get 8 copies.

Ungroup the groups of squares.

Now begins the fun part. Grab the Skin Tool and begin joining the squares in an orderly fashion: top inside-top outside-bottom outside-bottom inside and back to top inside and again. This requires concentration.

When we finish the strand, we will have used just 1 in 4 ribs. Delete the rest.

The finished strand. See that we will not use most ribs

Reduce the complexity of the strand and apply linear segments to it.

Convert to Polygon Mesh.

Now make a copy rotated 45ยบ with respecto to the original.

When smoothed and textured, lit, etc. we get this.

This is only the beginning. More to come.
