This is the My House Project tutorial in which we begin to build. We already have things set up and it is time to create the volumes for the house. We will outline the parts of the house using cubes and will refine them afterwards.
Examining the reference image and the grid, the house is roughly 25 ft wide by 12 ft. high, and it has two main modules. The porch side and the left side, so to speak. Each is 12.5ft. in width, and the porch is 16ft. deep. The sizes are:
- Porch: 12.5 x 12 x 16 ft.
- Garden: 12.5 x 12 x 12 ft.
- Bedroom: 12.5 x 12 x 12 ft.
- Living Room: 12.5 x 12 x 12 ft.
Let us create 4 cubes, then: the porch; the left side; and the bedroom (behind the porch).
Please notice that the blocks are 4 ft. from the red z=0 gridline. This will be the sidewalk.
Let us make Shy objects normal (Cmd+6 / Ctrl+6) and align the sidewalk to this line. After doing this, we can make it shy again.
To make the blocks perfectly aligned, we should use the Snap tool. It is great to make things fit precisely. To snap one cube to another, click on a vertex of the cube you want to snap. You should get a red square on the corner. Drag to the vertex of the cube you want the first cube to snap to. Then release. The first cube will move so that the two selected vertices are adjacent.
We are ready to begin refining the sections of the house. The camera should show us something like the image below.
This is the file at this stage, in case you may want to compare.
