Modeling my House X: Detailing the Porch

We already modeled the porch in the My House Project. Now we will refine it, adding curves to the structure and other details.

At the end of part IX we have this model file.

This is the state of the render.

The scene after finishing part IX

There is a slight arc in the front piece of the porch that we skipped. There are also wooden beams projecting from the front piece.

First, the arc.

We will replace the resized cube with a skin object consisting of 3 ribs. The middle rib will be shorter than the other two.

To create the arc, we double-click the porch group to edit it in its own window.

Let’s extend the x-grid for use as reference

Now we draw a 0.8×2 ft. rectangle which will be the first rib of the skinned arc.

Aligned at the top with the front piece we will replace

Replicate the rectangle. We need 3 rectangles

Reduce the size of the middle rectangle, dragging from below. Aim for a height of around 1.5 ft.

Skin the three rectangles. We now have a slight arc on the bottom of the object.

Snap the new piece into place and delete the cube.

Now, for the faux beams projectimg from the front, we will use rounded cubes. These cubes are replicated to the right and centered on the front piece.

Faux beams, 2.5 ft. apart

These beams receive a brown, mildly specular texture. No need to go for a full wood texture here.

The texture used for the beams.

Now we need corrugated roofing . These are drawn with the pen tool and extruded.

Drawing the profile to be extruded. This is drawn larger to use the grid as reference, and then scaled to 50%

Extruded panel

Next, we need more beams, to support the planks. Again, rounded cubes, resized to fit and replicated.

When we render, we’ll see there is no detail in the roofed porch. There is not enough light to make it possible to see the ceiling.

No light inside the ceiling

To overcome this, let us a Raydiosity render with more than one raydiosity bounce. In the render window, click on lighting and set 4 or 8 Raydiosity Bounces. This will make the inside of the ceiling visible.

This is the result.

And this is the project file for part X.
