PROJECT: A Mid-Century Modern Chair

This project walks through various aspects of modeling and rendering of a mid-century modern chair by French designer Jean Prouvé.

MODELING AND UV MAPPING

Part 1: Modeling the back leg of a mid-century modern chair.
Go to tutorial
This tutorial walks through the modeling of the back leg of the chair. It uses primitives, custom grids and guides, flatten operations and hard edges to create an elegant model that subdivides very predictably.

Part 2: Model the seat of the chair.

Alternative modeling method
This models and UV maps the seat component. The UV mapping portion includes the use of planar mapping and BurnUV. The alternative modeling method uses bezier curves as the starting point for creating the subdivision surface geometry

Part 3: Model the back of the chair.

This models and UV maps the seat back component.

Part 4: UV map the edge of the seat.

This UV mapping tutorial shows how to use the cylindrical map projection method to create UVs. It also shows how to make necessarily adjustments to these UVs in the UV editor. A demonstration of custom grids and subsets are also shown.

TEXTURING

Part 5: Use subsets to texture individual instances of the chair.

This materials tutorial shows how to use the subsets feature to apply specific materials several instances of a single shape. This helps to create a more complex scene while keeping a simple shape/instance setup.
