Another Quick Plant

We have done quick plants and ferns, quick, low-polygon plants suitable for architectural renderings. This is another way to do a quick plant. It uses lathed objects and a texture applied with planar mapping from the top.

We start with a profile.

Then lathe the profile.

The next step is creating a copy of the lathed object in place, by copy/pasting. Then edit the profile for the second object.

That is the whole modeling of the plant. Now we’ll texture.

The texture is basically a color map, a normal map, and a stencil map.

Diffuse Color Map

Normal map

We can quickly create normal maps from more intuitively created bump maps following this tutorial.

Stencil Map

The Texture should look like this.

Now we apply the texture to the lathed objects. The texture will be automatically mapped with cylindrical mapping. This we need to change to planar mapping.

We apply the texture to both lathes and then make sure the mapping is set to planar in both. We should have a plant like this.

With a lathed pot, we have a full plant, ready to place anywhere.

Here is the shape file.

I hope you found it useful.
