Using Smooth Mesh and Subdivision Surfaces to increase a polygon mesh resolution

This tutorial shows how to increase the resolution of a polygon mesh. It shows why the Smooth Mesh function can sometimes lead to a faceted look even after up-resing. It also shows why subdivision surfaces may be a better alternative. Finally, it shows how to adjust the source lathe object in order to increase the resolution of the derived polygon mesh without needing Smooth Mesh or subdivision surfaces.
